Position Summary
IHI is inviting applications for the position of Research Officer (Intern in Biostatistics) to join a cutting-edge project titled Molecular Surveillance of Malaria in Mainland Tanzania (MSMT2). The MSMT2 project aims to strengthen Tanzania’s capacity for malaria molecular surveillance by training young professionals while contributing to impactful research.
Selected interns will receive specialized training in biostatistics and data analysis while supporting the implementation of this high-profile project conducted in collaboration with Tanzania’s Ministry of Health, the National Malaria Control Programme, PO-RALG, and the National Institute for Medical Research.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive hands-on training in data management, cleaning, processing, and analysis related to malaria molecular surveillance.
- Support the management and appropriate storage of project data.
- Apply statistical methods and models such as linear regression, logistic regression, and survival analysis to real biomedical data.
- Develop skills in statistical computing using programming languages like R, STATA, Python, or SAS.
- Prepare statistical reports and presentations for research teams.
- Participate in research meetings, journal clubs, and contribute to manuscript preparation for scientific publications.
- Engage in training activities aimed at developing oral and written communication skills and supporting career development in biostatistics.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the Project Leader or Principal Investigator.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and Statistics, Biostatistics, Data Science, or related fields earned within the last 24 months.
- Minimum GPA of 3.8 in the first degree with demonstrated potential for scientific leadership.
- Experience or knowledge in bioinformatics and mathematical/statistical modeling is an added advantage.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in both Kiswahili and English.
- Teamwork skills and good time management.
