Department: Open Pit Mining
Reporting To: Supervisor – Maintenance
Purpose of the Role
The Heavy Equipment Mechanic will perform a wide range of mechanical maintenance tasks on mobile and stationary mining equipment. These tasks include preventive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance, with a focus on minimizing downtime through routine inspections and timely repairs. The role demands a high level of safety compliance, discipline, and technical competence.
Qualifications
- Diploma or Full Technician Certificate in Mechanical/Automotive Engineering or equivalent
- VETA Trade Test Certificate Grade One in Mechanical/Automotive
- VETA Level Three in Mechanical Engineering
- A Degree or Advanced Diploma in Mechanical Engineering is an added advantage
Experience Required
- 5 to 8 years of experience in mining or heavy equipment industries
- Expertise in working with Caterpillar Machines (e.g., EX 374), Liebherr Excavators (e.g., 945, 930), graders, dump trucks, and bulldozers
- Proficient in diagnosing and troubleshooting mechanical issues
- Basic knowledge of auto-electrical systems and diagnostics
Key Accountabilities
- Conduct mechanical inspections and routine maintenance as per schedule
- Respond to breakdowns in the field with efficiency and minimal supervision
- Perform planned maintenance to reduce unplanned repairs
- Follow all safety procedures before, during, and after tasks
- Complete accurate maintenance and repair reports
- Ensure cleanliness and organization in work areas
- Foster communication within the maintenance team and across departments
- Execute tasks with initiative, discipline, and responsibility
- Uphold all company values, policies, and regulatory compliance
- Meet deadlines without compromising quality or safety
- Suggest improvements in maintenance practices and planning
Additional Requirements
- Mechanical fitting, diagnostics, and repair expertise
- Knowledge of mechanical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, and safety mechanisms
- Ability to use maintenance software and computer tools
- Experience in training or supervising junior staff
- Strong understanding of HSE protocols and industrial safety
- Physically and mentally fit for demanding industrial work
- Fluency in English and Swahili
- Valid Tanzania driving license with proof of driving competency
