The Institute’s work spans biomedical and ecological sciences, intervention studies, health-systems research, and policy translation. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, National Malaria Control Programme, President’s Office, Regional Administration, Local Government, and National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR), IHI is now launching the second phase of the MSMT project.

Position Summary

The Post-Doctoral Fellow in Bioinformatics will play a crucial role in the MSMT2 project, focusing on enhancing local capacity for molecular, genetic, genomic, and serological laboratory and data analytics. This position involves working closely with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders to support malaria molecular surveillance and contribute to policy changes and informed decision-making for malaria control and elimination in Tanzania.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and Optimize Pipelines: Implement and refine pipelines for next-generation sequencing (NGS) data, including quality control, alignment, variant calling, annotation, and analysis.
  • Conduct Bioinformatics Analyses: Perform detailed analyses on large-scale genomic datasets from malaria samples to identify and characterize genetic markers associated with drug resistance and transmission patterns.
  • Integrate Data: Combine genomic data with clinical, epidemiological, and environmental information to provide comprehensive insights into malaria dynamics.
  • Collaborate: Work with epidemiologists, molecular biologists, and public health experts on interdisciplinary research studies.
  • Support Project Management: Assist in managing the MSMT2 project, including data collection, analysis, reporting, and proposal development for future funding.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Educational Background: Ph.D. or equivalent degree in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Genomics, Data Science, or a related field, with a minimum GPA of 3.8.
  • Research Experience: Proven track record in large-scale data analysis, genomic data interpretation, and bioinformatics tool development.
  • Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, Perl, or Java, and bioinformatics tools and software like BLAST, BWA, and GATK.
  • Publication Record: Significant research contributions evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals.
