Job Summary

IHI is inviting applications from highly motivated graduates for two positions as Research Officer Interns in Genomics & Bioinformatics. Successful candidates will undergo specialized training while contributing to the Molecular Surveillance of Malaria in Mainland Tanzania (MSMT2) project. This initiative aims to bolster Tanzania’s capacity in malaria molecular surveillance, aiding in data-driven policy decisions for effective malaria control and elimination.

This is a full-time position based in Dar es Salaam and offers an excellent opportunity to develop skills in molecular biology, genomics, bioinformatics, and public health research.

Key Responsibilities

Interns will receive comprehensive theoretical and hands-on training in:

  • Sample collection, processing, and analysis in accordance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
  • Performing laboratory procedures including storage, documentation, and analysis of specimens
  • Maintenance and quality control of laboratory equipment and procedures
  • Communication and coordination with hospitals, field teams, and research staff for accurate laboratory records
  • Implementation of Good Clinical Laboratory Practices (GCLP) and adherence to internal and external regulatory requirements
  • Science communication, grant writing, data analytics, manuscript development, and journal clubs
  • Participation in project meetings and capacity-building workshops
  • Any additional responsibilities assigned by project supervisors or the Principal Investigator

Qualifications and Experience

  1. Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science or Molecular Biology and Biotechnology awarded within the last 24 months
  2. Minimum GPA of 3.8 and a demonstrated potential for scientific leadership
  3. Experience in genomics and practical knowledge of molecular biology techniques is an added advantage
  4. At least one year of experience in a relevant research or laboratory setting is preferred

Skills and Competencies

  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and time-management abilities
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision
  • Effective team player with good interpersonal communication skills in both English and Kiswahili
