Job Summary
The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), on behalf of the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), is hiring a Research Associate to support the implementation of the PAFIE-BSFL project. The project evaluates innovations to accelerate Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL) production as an alternative feed protein for small-scale farmers in Kenya and Tanzania. The successful candidate will be based in Dar es Salaam and play a key role in field research, data collection, and stakeholder engagement.
Key Responsibilities
Field Research & Data Collection
- Assist in designing and implementing BSFL field studies.
- Oversee BSFL technology trials conducted by BSF Breeding and Chanzi Ltd in Dar es Salaam and Arusha.
- Collect data on waste feedstock streams, including type, quantity, and seasonality.
- Gather financial and economic data from BSF businesses and feed companies using BSFL as a protein ingredient.
- Supervise data collection for on-farm experimental trials assessing BSFL-based feeds and their impact on crops.
Data Analysis & Reporting
- Analyze research data, interpret results, and contribute to reports, manuscripts, and presentations.
- Assist in research ethics applications and data-sharing agreements.
- Prepare and submit progress reports on project activities.
Stakeholder Engagement & Project Management
- Organize and facilitate workshops, farmer mobilization, and feedback sessions.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams, partners, and stakeholders to ensure project success.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Qualifications & Skills
Education & Experience
- Master’s degree in Livestock Sciences, Agricultural Economics, or a related field.
- At least 3 years of experience in livestock value chains, climate-smart productivity innovations, and waste management.
- Professional certification in a relevant field is an added advantage.

Employment Terms
- Contract Duration: Two years (renewable based on performance and funding).
