Background

WorldVeg, funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and in partnership with the Global Crop Diversity Trust, is implementing a vital initiative to safeguard, regenerate, and promote African vegetable genetic resources. The genebank in Arusha is a key global repository for indigenous African vegetables, essential for food security, nutrition, and income generation in Sub-Saharan Africa. This project involves seed regeneration, viability testing, digital database updates, and seed kit distribution to support biodiversity and community resilience.

Effective communication is critical to highlight the importance of these efforts by engaging national partners, regional stakeholders, and global donors with clear, creative, and credible content. The consultant will translate technical operations into compelling multimedia stories to amplify WorldVeg’s impact.

Objectives of the Assignment

  • Produce multimedia content that showcases genebank activities and their scientific, environmental, and human impact.
  • Strengthen stakeholder engagement by creating culturally relevant content for national partners, researchers, policymakers, and farmers across Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Support advocacy and reporting by generating content aligned with project milestones for donors and FAO.
  • Translate technical work into engaging narratives and visuals for diverse audiences.
  • Promote indigenous African vegetables' role in climate resilience, food security, and income generation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop multimedia content: scripting, filming, editing, and post-production of videos, photo essays, infographics, blogs, and human interest features.
  • Draft communication materials such as reports, brochures, newsletters, and web content to support project visibility and reporting.
  • Edit content for print, web, and social media platforms.
  • Provide media coverage of WorldVeg’s events, including photos, videos, interviews, and social media posts.
  • Conduct communication training for WorldVeg staff and partners.
  • Manage local media relationships and public relations efforts.
  • Provide digital media analytics and recommend improvements.

Deliverables

  • Produce at least 10 short videos (7–10 minutes) and 2 feature documentaries (10–15 minutes).
  • Submit Monthly Highlights Package with short clips, photo stories, and social media assets.
  • Write at least 5 feature articles or blog posts for WorldVeg and partner platforms.
  • Provide donor-compliant visual materials and maintain a structured communications archive.
  • Submit monthly communication briefs and a final summary report.

Required Qualifications and Competencies

  • Degree in Journalism, Communication, Film Production, or 10+ years relevant experience.
  • Proven skills in content creation, camera work, directing, editing, and post-production in East Africa.
  • Experience with international NGOs, donor programs, or media agencies.
  • Excellent English and Kiswahili communication skills; knowledge of regional languages is a plus.
  • Ability to tailor messages for diverse global and multicultural audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.

This is a Nationally Recruited Staff (NRS) position with competitive pay and benefits. The successful candidate will embody WorldVeg’s core values: Innovation, Impact, Partnerships, Respect for People, and Respect for the Environment.
