Overview

Six Rivers Africa (SRA) is a non-profit organization in Tanzania dedicated to understanding, preserving, and restoring flora and fauna in wilderness areas. We support neighbouring communities through collaboration with government authorities and conservation partners. We are looking for an experienced Head of Field Operations to oversee a broad range of construction, maintenance, and operational projects across multiple locations in Southern Tanzania. This role suits a versatile professional with extensive experience in project management, logistics, construction, and maintenance, particularly in conservation, tourism, and infrastructure sectors.

Key Responsibilities

  • Capital Projects & Infrastructure Development

    • Lead planning, design, budgeting, and execution of capital projects (base camps, hangars, airstrips, fuel storage, research camps, offices, staff accommodation, workshops)

    • Oversee construction in remote, sensitive ecosystems ensuring ecological compliance and minimizing environmental impact

    • Design and implement prefabricated, sustainable structures adapted to remote field conditions

    • Conduct feasibility assessments for new infrastructure projects aligned with conservation needs

  • Asset & Fleet Management (Water, Land, Air)

    • Manage operational readiness and maintenance of capital equipment: boats, 4×4 vehicles, tractors, logistics trucks, and aviation fuel tracking

    • Lead a technical team including mechanics, boat specialists, and drivers

  • Workshop & Technical Facility Management

    • Design and manage workshops for carpentry, metal works, mechanical repairs, and prefabrication

    • Oversee stock control, stores management, and procurement of tools, consumables, and spare parts

    • Develop SOPs for safety, operational checks, and efficiency improvements

  • Logistics & Supply Chain Coordination

    • Establish and optimize supply chains for remote operations including bulk purchasing, international procurement, customs handling, and last-mile delivery

    • Manage procurement budgets for construction materials, machinery, solar systems, fuel, and camp supplies

    • Coordinate field logistics

  • Maintenance & Refurbishment of Field Bases

    • Develop and implement maintenance schedules for buildings, solar installations, plumbing, power systems, and communication infrastructure

    • Lead refurbishments and upgrades of base infrastructure according to conservation requirements

  • Project Budgeting, Reporting & Compliance

    • Prepare and manage budgets ensuring cost efficiency, accountability, and donor transparency

    • Maintain detailed documentation: procurement logs, asset registers, maintenance logs, progress reports

    • Ensure compliance with SRA financial controls and processes

  • Community Engagement & Conservation Support

    • Support community infrastructure projects aligned with conservation goals (ranger outposts, wells, TANAPA infrastructure)

    • Liaise with park authorities, local leaders, and stakeholders for smooth construction and shared infrastructure use

    • Facilitate logistics and infrastructure for researchers, rangers, and conservation stakeholders

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Proven experience in operations management for construction, maintenance, or operations in remote locations
  • Strong background managing construction projects from design to completion including camps, accommodations, workshops, and vehicle maintenance
  • Expertise in procurement and supply chain management for remote, large-scale projects
  • Hands-on knowledge of boat maintenance, fiberglass repair, engine management, and fleet coordination
  • Proficient in budget management ensuring cost efficiency
  • Excellent leadership and communication skills with proven experience managing diverse teams
  • Experience working in remote, challenging environments with minimal infrastructure
  • Bachelor’s degree in construction management, civil engineering, or related field preferred but not essential
  • Knowledge of solar power installations and sustainable off-grid systems
  • Experience with major projects in Southern Tanzania or large infrastructure projects across East Africa is an advantage
