About Danish Refugee Council (DRC)

Founded in 1956, the Danish Refugee Council is a leading humanitarian NGO providing direct assistance to refugees, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and host communities in over 40 countries worldwide. Since 2015, DRC has been active in Tanzania’s Kigoma Region, supporting refugees from Burundi through various integrated projects in camp coordination, protection, shelter, and economic recovery.

Role Overview

The Finance Coordinator will support the Finance Manager and Area Manager in overseeing finance operations for DRC Tanzania (Kigoma region). This senior role focuses on ensuring financial compliance, accuracy, and effectiveness of control systems while providing hands-on financial management and capacity building within the team and partners. The position requires ensuring compliance with DRC policies, donor requirements, and Tanzanian laws (including tax and labor regulations).

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and validate financial records for compliance with DRC’s handbook and donor policies across all support units (finance, HR, procurement, admin).
  • Lead annual financial statement submissions and liaise with auditors, HQ, and regional offices.
  • Implement tax compliance measures and ensure adherence to Tanzanian financial laws.
  • Build capacity of finance staff and partners on compliance, audit findings, and financial best practices.
  • Serve as the focal point for external audits and follow up on recommendations.
  • Provide financial oversight and training for local partners, including budget preparation and reporting.
  • Support SOP development and local policy adaptation based on organizational needs and compliance gaps.
  • Coordinate monthly financial reviews, ensuring timely rebookings and financial issue resolution.
  • Monitor salary allocations and manage budget forecasts.
  • Manage financial reporting, cash advances, journals, and payments using Dynamics or similar ERP systems.
  • Ensure all financial obligations (taxes, returns, NGO reports) are met timely.
  • Liaise with grants and program staff on financial reporting and compliance.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s Degree or advanced qualification in Finance or related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of professional experience in finance, including at least 3 years in compliance functions or similar senior finance roles.
  • Experience with large INGOs, including knowledge of INGO finance rules and donor compliance.
  • Proficiency in financial software, preferably Microsoft ERP systems.
  • Fluent in English and Kiswahili (spoken and written).
